Lighting a candle is one of life’s simple pleasures — but to enjoy it fully (and safely), it’s important to know how to take care of it. Whether you’ve just picked up your first candle from my shop or you’re a long-time candle lover, these tips will help you get the best burn while keeping your space protected.

1. Trim the Wick Before Every Burn

Always trim your wick to about ¼ inch before lighting. Whether it's cotton or a wooden wick, this prevents large flames, reduces soot, and helps the candle burn evenly. Long or mushroomed wicks can lead to tunneling or uneven burn.

2. Let It Burn to the Edges (First Time Especially)

The first burn is the most important! Let your candle melt all the way to the edges of the container (usually 2–3 hours) to avoid tunneling. This sets the candle “memory” and helps it burn evenly every time.

3. Don’t Burn Longer Than 4 Hours at a Time

While it’s tempting to leave a candle burning all day, it’s safest to limit each session to 3–4 hours. This prevents overheating and extends the life of your candle.

4. Keep Away from Drafts, Pets, and Children

Always place your candle on a heat-resistant surface, away from breezes, curtains, or anything flammable. And never leave a lit candle unattended — especially with kids or pets around.

5. Store in a Cool, Dry Place

Soy wax is sensitive to heat and light. Keep your candles away from direct sunlight or extreme temperatures, which can affect the fragrance and appearance.

6. Use a Snuffer or Lid to Extinguish

Blowing out candles can cause wax to splatter and wicks to smolder. A candle snuffer or simply placing the lid gently over the flame is a safer way to extinguish your candle cleanly.

Warnings & Safety Reminders:

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.

  • Always keep candles out of reach of children and pets.

  • Do not burn candles on or near anything that can catch fire.

  • Stop use when ½ inch of wax remains in the container.

  • Do not touch or move a burning candle — let it cool before handling.

Handmade soy candles are a joy to use — especially when cared for the right way. Follow these simple steps to enjoy a cleaner, longer-lasting, and safer burn every time.
